Sales Consultant vs. Sales Coach vs. Fractional VP of Sales: What's the Difference?
These three terms get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems with very different levels of accountability.
Sales Consultant.
Analyzes your sales organization and delivers recommendations — a strategy, a plan, a set of fixes. The deliverable is advice. Valuable when you have leadership that can execute a plan but needs outside expertise to shape it. Limitation: execution is left to you.
Sales Coach.
Develops people — reps, managers, or leaders — through ongoing guidance and skill-building. Ideal when the structure is right and you want to raise individual capability, especially new managers or founders still selling. Limitation: improves people, not the system around them.
Fractional VP of Sales.
Combines both and adds ownership. Diagnoses like a consultant, develops the team like a coach, and leads execution while carrying accountability for pipeline, forecast, and revenue — as an embedded executive, part-time. The right fit when you need someone to actually run sales.
